Recently voted 2013 “Best of the Best” at Sydney Design Awards – Prince Alfred Park Pool facility, the park and its environs are part of the City of Sydney Council’s ‘Green Transformer’ Scheme where projects are encouraged to reduce their reliance on mains energy and water.
ACOR carried out an in-depth Energy Study and business case modelling for the building, the park precinct and the pool plant. After assessing energy supply options, ACOR designed a pool system which realises approximately 50% CO2 reduction over traditional systems, moreover the pool is constructed of 80% recycled material which is fully recoverable and redeployable at the end of the facility’s life. The system also requires less plant room space, however provision has been made to future proof the facility with allowances made to retrofit energy saving power and heat generation systems if required.
The pool facility works involved: an upgrade of the existing swimming pool to a modern aquatic facility, including a 50m pool; a separate toddler’s splash deck and a public use café, pool management and patron amenities.
Innovations include: a Myrtha system to renovate the existing tiled pool; Ultra Fine Filtration to provide superior water quality and 87% reduction in water consumption with a gas boiler system to assist pool heating.
