ACOR was engaged by Sydney Attractions Group to inspect the existing aquarium structure, formulate a remediation strategy for the respective deteriorated elements and project manage the repairs on this iconic landmark.
Comprehensive inspections, sampling and testing were conducted to determine the extent of chloride contamination and corrosion of various concrete elements. Extensive damage was evident to the sedimentation tank, seal pool at level 4, filter rooms and other miscellaneous areas.
ACOR’s services included:
- Remediation strategy
- Designing a new and innovative, U-shaped reinforced concrete system in the sedimentation tank, which utilised the existing radial beams as formwork – the sedimentation tank is a crucial structural component of the building
- Traditional remediation across all areas
- Design of an extensive Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) system to help prevent future deterioration
