The implementation phase of Stage 1, Garden Islands (East) Critical Infrastructure Recovery Program is underway. The existing Cruiser and Oil Wharves were demolished in 2019 to optimise the wharf alignment.
The new realigned wharf will improve the efficiency of fuelling and maintenance operations by reconfiguring ship berthing arrangements and limiting protrusion over the harbour. ACOR led the design of hydraulic, fire and fuel infrastructure services for the project which will improve the condition and capacity of the services infrastructure on the site and resolve compliance issues. Stage two will remediate the remaining wharves as well as base-wide engineering services such as the electrical and fuel systems.
Defence is investing around $700 million in major infrastructure works at the base over the next decade to ensure the base fully supports the naval capability requirements set by the federal government. ACOR Consultants is collaborating with Lendlease to deliver the works, with construction scheduled to start in May 2019 and complete in late 2023.
