As part of the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program the Sydney Harbor Wharf upgrades encapsulated renewal works on a number of prominent foreshore locations.  Working in a highly constrained environment the design provides universal access from the wharves to connecting roads and transport infrastructure.  ACOR Consultants provided civil and structural engineering for the landside component of the works, resolving the grading and topography for new roads, pavements, footpaths, car parks, stairways, ramps and landings.

Case Study Cabarita

In order to make the design work, Cabarita wharf required a number of civil and structural engineering interventions, including road widening, path upgrades, widening of kerb edges and a new kiss and ride zone. The team undertook a comprehensive design verification assessment to test scenarios for the introduction of busses into the space. The resulting engineering solution modified the kurb alignment and car park configuration to ensure the kiss and ride drop off zone was safe and accessible whilst optimising space for car parking.  The Cabarita site utilises locally sourced sandstone and some salvaged stone for retaining walls which compliment the design intent.  The team also assisted with the specification of new seating, rest and viewing areas.

Case Study Chiswick

The Chiswick site includes a new viewing area looking out to the foreshore and an extended paved area to accommodate an additional 10 bike racks.  The path alignment slopes gently to accommodate universal access and several additional seating areas provide additional rest spaces.  The package of work combined the refurbishment of the toilet blocks for universal accessibility with improved access to the adjacent parkland and community gardens.  Pathways in the reserve were also regraded to achieve a universal access outcome with new ramps and tactiles also installed.
