The project is for a 19-storey hotel and apartment tower at the former site of the Pentridge Prison. The historical site in Melbourne was home to many infamous prisoners, including Mark “Chopper” Read, and was the site where the last execution happened in Australia.
The new tower is to be developed by Shayher Group and will connect to the existing Division B cell block.
Already Shayher has signed up TFE Hotels, a joint venture between the Toga Group and Singapore’s Far East Hospitality Holdings, to operate a 120-room Adina Apartment Hotel on the old prison site.
Built in the 1850s, the former Pentridge prison is listed the Victorian Heritage Register and has a requirement that its historical elements be restored.
