ACOR Consultants has been leading upgrade works to the swimming pool facility at RAAF Base Tindal (NT).  Working with JLL Augility and Hames Sharley, the team is undertaking design and engineering services to deliver significant cosmetic improvements across the pool areas whilst enhancing safety and hygiene within the facility.

ACOR Consultants has been working at RAAF Base Tindal in varying capacities since 2017.  The Sydney remedial team undertook an assessment of the swimming pool in 2018 and since then our Sydney and Perth offices, lead by Grant Potter and Chau Doan, have collaborated to oversee the design and project management of the works.

Both the existing 50m swimming pool and the wading pool area’s are being upgraded and a new plant room, containing new infrastructure and services will come into operation.   The following items are due to be implemented over a staged period with final completion anticipated in late 2020:

  • Installation of heat pumps to maintain pool temperature throughout the year;
  • Retiling within the existing pool shell areas and remediation works;
  • Improvement of Lighting;
  • New shade sail canopy;
  • Bubble feature for the wading pool;
  • Refurbishment of existing amenity blocks;
  • New pumps to optimise water circulation efficiency;
  • Improvement in filtration systems and separation of systems between the wading pool and the 50m outdoor pool; and
  • Repainting and re-coating of key features in the pool and its surrounds.

RAAF Base Tindal is located 320 kms south-east of Darwin and 15 kms outside neighbouring Katherine.  The base is very much part of the Katherine community with RAAF personnel and families making up almost 25% of Katherine’s population of 10,000 people. The Base’s contribution to the local community includes allowing public access to the pool for events.   The base is one of Australia’s most important defence sites with over $1 billion of upgrade works due to be delivered over the next 10 years.
