Chinatown Revitalisation – Broome, WA

Project Overview

The transformational urban renewal initiative was delivered through a partnership between State and Local Government. Located in the heart of the CBD, the team implemented a place-based approach to urban renewal which contributes towards the long-term prosperity of local business and the wider community.

Our Approach

ACOR provided multidisciplinary services and undertook the superintendent role for the project, managing the builder whilst coordinating the consultant team and wider stakeholders, from detailed design through to completion.

The revitalisation included streetscape upgrades to Carnarvon Street and Dampier Terrace, providing new outdoor dining areas for local businesses, lighting, event space, shade canopies, improved access, and additional amenities such as water bubblers and bike storage.

The upgrades form part of a wider revitalisation program from which ACOR has established a local presence in Broome. By having this local presence, our team had the capability to manage and resolve any issues in a seamless manner.

The project was officially opened in May 2019 and the positive change is evident by a sense of community ownership, resulting in a reduction in anti-social behaviour. The increased pedestrian activity has meant that many businesses have extended their trading hours and several new businesses have opened.
