On Saturday 21st March the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA), awarded the best projects in WA, with the Shire of Broome Chinatown Revitalisation winning the Urban Renewal Category. ACOR undertook the superintendent role for the project, managing the builder, Downer EDI, whilst coordinating the consultant team and wider stakeholders from Detailed Design through to Practical Completion.
The transformational urban renewal initiative was delivered through a partnership between State and Local Government. Located in the heart of the CBD the team implemented a place-based approach to urban renewal, which will contribute towards the long-term prosperity of local businesses and the wider community.
The $7m revitalisation included streetscape upgrades to Carnarvon Street and Dampier Terrace, providing new outdoor dining areas for local businesses, lighting, event space, shade canopies, improved access and additional amenities such as water bubblers and secure bicycle parking.
The project was officially opened in May 2019 and the positive change is evident with an increased sense of community ownership, resulting in a reduction in anti-social behaviour. As a result of increased pedestrian activity, many businesses have extended their trading hours and several new businesses have opened.
